La maison viennoise Widder Auktionen met à l’honneur le peintre franco-autrichien Willy Eisenschitz, figure du modernisme européen. Une dizaine d’œuvres représentatives de son travail en Provence seront présentées lors d’une vente aux enchères le 28 novembre. Rencontre.
Né en 1889 à Vienne, Willy Eisenschitz (1889-1974) étudie d’abord à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de sa ville natale avant de s’installer à Paris en 1912. Attiré par les avant-gardes françaises, il trouve une harmonie entre les influences viennoises classiques et les innovations modernes françaises. C’est après la Première Guerre mondiale qu’il découvre la Provence, région qui deviendra centrale dans son art. Installé dans le sud de la France, il développe un style lumineux et poétique, capturant la chaleur des paysages et la douceur des collines provençales.
Parmi les œuvres mises en vente, Les Alpilles (estimée entre 20 000 et 40 000 euros) illustre à merveille le talent d’Eisenschitz pour capturer la lumière. Ses touches de couleur éclatantes et ses compositions équilibrées transforment des scènes rurales en œuvres vibrantes. Une autre pièce marquante, Paysage dans la Drôme (1 600 à 3 200 euros), une aquarelle subtile et intime, témoigne de son attrait pour les techniques spontanées et l’observation directe de la nature. Ces œuvres reflètent un artiste en symbiose avec son environnement.
Une figure de l’art moderne
Au-delà de son style, Eisenschitz incarne une figure d’artiste européen cosmopolite, traversant les grands bouleversements du XXe siècle. Ses œuvres, marquées par l’héritage viennois, les paysages français et des influences venant de Paul Cézanne et des Impressionnistes, reflètent un dialogue constant entre tradition et modernité. Aujourd’hui, grâce à des institutions et à des collectionneurs passionnés, son travail est redécouvert, gagnant une place méritée parmi les grands noms de l’art moderne.

In Paris he maintained contacts with Josef Floch, Viktor Tischler, Georg Merkel and Walter Bondy. During the Second World War he retreated to Dieulefît, signed his works with the pseudonym Villiers. From 1951 he also travelled to Ibiza and lived alternately in Paris and Provence. After the death of his wife in 1969, he returned to Paris. Created primarily oil paintings and watercolours with landscapes and city views, influenced by the nature and light of southern France.

Cette vente sera l’occasion de découvrir une partie de son travail à travers des huiles sur toile et des aquarelles, mais également de pénétrer dans son intimité. En effet, certains lieux représentés en peinture permettent d’en apprendre davantage sur l’artiste. C’est le cas de Paysage près de Dieulefit (10 000 à 20 000 euros) peint vers 1945, période ou il trouve refuge dans cette commune après avoir été inquiété par la police en raison de ses origines juives. Enfin, la vacation présentera deux tableaux réalisés par sa femme, Claire Bertrand-Eisenschitz (1890-1969), qu’il épouse en 1913 et qui le suivra lors de son internement pendant la Première Guerre Mondiale. Elle mettra ainsi au monde leurs deux enfants dans ce camp d’internement.
Des tableaux et dessins estimés de 150 à 40 000 euros
Les œuvres de Willy Eisenschitz, bien que rares en ventes publiques, rencontrent toujours du succès lors de leur passage sur le marché. Au regard des résultats des dernières années, son travail attire toujours la ferveur des amateurs de peinture moderne. Pour exemple, en décembre 2015, l’étude De Baecque adjugeait à 61 000 euros une huile sur toile d’un Village animé dans la Drôme, dans le même goût que les paysages proposés le 28 novembre.
